Why You Should Use Lemon Essential Oil!

Lemon is something we are all familiar with. But did you know that lemons contain powerful properties that are beneficial to you and your family?! Let’s explore some of lemon’s amazing benefits now!

Scientific Name

First let’s look at the scientific name of the lemon that I use.

It is Citrus limonum.

This might not seem important, but trust me, it is! Some essential oils have lots of different species. Some of these species can be harmful. So it is important when purchasing an essential oil to make sure that you read the full scientific name so that you know what you are getting.

For example, eucalyptus essential oil is an oil that I use on my kids for respiratory concerns and immune support. But, some varieties of eucalyptus essential oil can actually stop a small child’s breathing! We’ll discuss this more in a future post.

What is Lemon and where does it come from?

The bright vibrant lemon fruit grows on trees in many areas of the world. They are originally thought to have grown in India and China, but are now common in many many countries.

Lemon essential oil is cold pressed from the lemon peel.

What does Lemon smell like?

Lemon is a scent we are all very familiar with. Whether you have eaten lemons, lemon meringue pie, lemon drop candy or lemonade we are all familiar with the sweet and sour taste and smell of lemon.

Lemons have a sweet yet tart clean scent. Because it smells so fresh the scent of lemon is commonly used in many household cleaners.

Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, in his book The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils, quotes Dr. Jean Valnet saying that “Lemon oil is effective against liver stagnation.” You can find even more amazing qualities of lemon in his book. It is definitely a must read for the EO enthusiast.

Due to this amazing effect that lemon has on the liver I love to use it in a gentle liver cleanse. You can find the recipe for the liver cleanse here.

Also in Dr. Schnaubelt’s book Advanced Aromatherapy, he says that “lemon is perhaps the most effective oil for disinfecting room air using a diffuser”.

Another great essential oil source is Valerie Ann Worwood’s book The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy. In this book Valerie states that lemon essential oil is a useful water purifier and has a tonic action on the lymphatic system and a stimulating action on the digestive system.

I also use lemon in my cold and flu protection room spray, my hot flash spray, and my happy home room spray. It truly is such a versatile oil!

Contraindications

A contraindication is a medical reason for not using something. In this case it is a medical reason for why you should not use lemon.

Lemon, and any other citrus essential oil, is photosensitive. Which means that you should not apply lemon oil to the skin before going out into the sun. By using lemon oil and then going out into the sun you can end up with a very bad sunburn. Even third degree burns!

Quality

You also want to make sure that you are using a good quality lemon.

As an Aromatherapist I would never recommend buying an essential oil at a local store. I can almost guarantee you that it is not a pure oil.

There are no government regulations on essential oils, so an oil can be diluted by up to 50% and still be marketed as a pure oil. It can be diluted with a carrier oil, or with a synthetic substance and still be called pure. How scary is that?! Definitely not something I want to use, especially for my family! You have to be so careful when choosing your brand.

Which Brand of Essentials Oils Should I Use?

So make sure that you know and trust your source. If you have a brand that you feel confident in you can use that. If you aren’t sure about where to get lemon, or if you would like to check out the brand that I use, you can find it on my business website Healing Blends For Life.
