If your kids are anything like mine they love smoothies! Mine ask for one almost every morning. And, being the mom that I am, I can’t just give them puréed fruit in a cup! What kind of crazy health freak would I be if I just gave my kids straight fruit?!

So, of course, I add in some healthy goodies, and the best part is that they have no idea that they are even there! 😉 Now, I will admit that I have made some smoothies in the past that I couldn’t get them to drink, at least not without complaining! But I have finally created a smoothie that they all love and that contains enough added nutrition to make me happy! It’s a win win!

The Protein Packed Probiotic Smoothie That Your Kids Will LOVE

The kids have started calling it the ‘Cherry Berry Smoothie’!

Most of the time I just kind of eyeball it and dump stuff in, not being that exact. But for your sake I measured it out to make it easier on you! Also, Sometimes I blend mine in individual servings using my magic bullet (this is great when we are running out the door for a soccer or basketball game on a Saturday morning!), and then sometimes I blend a big batch in my Vitamix so that I can pour it into their favorite cups with their favorite glass straws! It makes the experience more fun!;) The recipe that I am sharing with you today makes a batch that will serve 2 adults or an adult and several children.

I start out by adding frozen organic berries. I usually get mine from Sam’s Club or Costco. Our favorite is a blend that contains cherries, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. The kids love berries! I love berries because, unlike some other fruits, they are more blood sugar friendly. They also have tons of health benefits. The cranberries are good for the urinary system, the blueberries are great for cognitive function, they contain antioxidants, reduce inflammation, are great for heart health and so much more! They also taste yummy and are great for masking other ingredients!

Water-kefir

The next ingredient that I add is water kefir. Now if you prefer, you can substitute this with kombucha. I have used both, but not all of my children are kombucha fans so I usually use plain water kefir.

For those of you who are not familiar with water kefir let me fill you in. Water kefir is fermented water. It is made by adding kefir grains (bacteria and yeast) to sugar water. The grains then eat the sugar and in return leave probiotics in the water.

According to Dr. Axe, research has proven that probiotics help to boost the immune system, prevent and treat urinary tract infections, improve digestive function, heal inflammatory bowel conditions, manage and prevent eczema in children and fight food-borne illnesses.

I purchase my water kefir grains from Kombucha Kamp. They ship their live cultures in a sugar water solution which helps to ensure that your grains will not die while transitioning to their new environment.

Liquid-whey

The Third ingredient that I add to our smoothie is Liquid Whey. Because Miss Muffet shouldn’t be the only one to benefit from this amazing liquid gold!

Liquid whey is not something you can buy in a store. It is a by-product of cheese making or can be made by straining yogurt through cheese cloth for several hours or overnight. I personally get mine from my homemade goat cheese. We’ll cover that in a future post;) Whey is super easy to make. But if you decide that you don’t want to make it, you can leave it out without changing the flavor of the smoothie. Just add a little extra water kefir.

While powdered whey bought in stores is not always so great, liquid whey contains many health benefits. Various cultures have been consuming liquid whey for centuries!

Whey is an excellent source of protein, it contains amino acids, probiotics, minerals and vitamins. In my eyes it really is liquid gold!

Next I add protein rich gelatin. Now I know what you’re thinking- are we making smoothies or jello?! Gelatin is basically collagen. You know, the stuff that our skin has a shortage of as we get older, causing us to wrinkle! Gelatin helps to improve the elasticity of our skin and fills in fine lines.

But did you also know that it is great for digestive health? It helps to heal a leaky gut and reduces inflammation. Which in turn helps the body reverse food allergies and intolerances which can begin with a leaky gut. It also increases the amount of gastric acid in the gut, which helps to digest proteins.

Collagen is also great for bone and joint health. Did you know that our bones and joints are made up primarily of collagen? So it only makes sense that consuming collagen helps to make our bones stronger and to increase bone density. Imagine how helpful this is for children, whose bones are still growing!

And, as if it couldn’t get any better, gelatin has no flavor! So you get all the health benefits and it doesn’t change the flavor of your smoothie at all!

This is the brand of gelatin that I use. It is made from grass-fed, hormone free cows. For smoothies you want to make sure that you are getting collagen hydrolysate as well. This kind of gelatin will not cause liquids to solidify like jello, so you can mix it in just about anything.

Our 5th ingredient is chia seeds. Chia seeds are among some of the most nutritious foods on the planet!

Chia seeds are loaded with fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium. So add some to your smoothie and eat your bird seed ?!

Next we are going to add a dietary supplement. If you have a favorite powdered supplement you can add that, or you can use the one that I use for my family. It is called Nutriverus. I get mine from my local holistic chiropractor’s office, but it can be purchased here as well.

Nutriverus is a superfood-based formula containing organic fruits and vegetables. It provides powerful antioxidant and immune system support, supports brain health, helps maintain energy, supports healthy digestion and helps protect the cardiovascular system.

Orange Essential Oil Lemon Essential Oil And finally, our last, but certainly not least, ingredient is either lemon or orange essential oil! The smoothie pictured in this post has lemon essential oil added to it, but orange is super yummy also!

Orange gives the smoothie a sweet citrus flavor and lemon adds a pleasant tartness. Both oils are uplifting and mood elevating. They are both antibacterial and excellent for the digestive system. They also both help improve concentration. Orange is useful for hyperactive children while lemon is excellent for colds and flus! Either way you can’t go wrong! Pick your favorite or add both if you can’t decide!

Well, there you have it! Are you now convinced that this smoothie is totally awesome?! I can’t wait for you to try it, I know you’ll love it!

Do you have any favorite ingredients that you always add to your smoothies? If so please share them with me! I would love to try them!
