Childhood Emotions and Essential Oils

As parents we watch our children experience many different emotions throughout the day. We also have a desire to help our children to express and release their emotions in healthy ways. But it is challenging sometimes!

Having four children myself (both boys and girls), I know how hard it can be to always respond in a way that we should as parents.

Valerie Worwood, in her book ‘The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy‘, writes: “Mental health is as precious as physical health; indeed, the sharp distinction so often drawn between the two is misleading.”

Emotions are such an important part of life! And how our children view and express their emotions will contribute to what kind of people they will be as adults. No pressure parents!

Valerie Worwood goes on to discuss using essential oils for emotional stress, irritability, depression, anxiety, fears, guilt and so on.

Jennifer Hochell Pressimone in her course ‘Specialized Holistic Aromatherapy‘; says that “Certain essential oils can help children overcome physical and emotional challenges. They can help children shift, change, alter or manage emotions.”

How do essential oils work in this way?

The olfactory system!

The olfactory system is what allows us to smell. Within one second of inhaling an essential oil it has entered the body.

This is the fastest sense to be processed. The sense of smell is in direct contact with the nervous system.

The scent molecule touches the brain, which in turn tells the body how to respond to the situation.

Smells can trigger many different emotions. They can make you happy or sad. And they can uplift, relax and calm the mind and body.

And that’s where essential oils come into play! According to Jennifer Hochell Pressimone in her course ‘Introduction to Holistic Aromatherapy‘, “Certain oils contain properties that are relaxing and calming. Other oils contain invigorating properties. Your body is smart and resilient and will respond to essential oils needed to balance out emotions and mental abilities.” She also says that “Children tend to respond quicker to aromatherapy vs. adults, especially when it comes to emotional healing.”

Some basic essential oils that I personally use with my family, are Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Red Mandarin, Frankincense etc.

Historically, according to Jennifer Hochell Pressimone:

Lavender essential oil has been shown to provide an environment that encourages calm and relaxed emotions.

Roman Chamomile has been shown to assist those experiencing anger.

Red Mandarin has historically been used for stress and tension.

And Frankincense has been shown to assist those experiencing fear. I love frankincense for fear personally! When I smell frankincense, I feel like I am ready to take on the world! My children love using essential oils. Their favorite way to use them is in a roll-on! A roll-on allows them to apply the oils themselves.

This is one of the reasons why I love the Essential Oil Roll-ons for Kids’ Emotions Chart!

This free chart includes recipes for various emotions, and shows your child how to use them in color coordinated roll-on bottles!

The emotional faces on the chart, allow your child to match the emotion that they are experiencing with the correct roll-on bottle. This means that even children that cannot yet read can determine which roll-on they would like to use!

This awesome tool helps children to recognize their own emotions and encourages them to manage their emotions in a productive way.

And the good news is that I offer this super cool chart for FREE!
