DIY Essential Oils First Aid Kit

DIY Essential Oils First Aid Kit

Recently my son went on a trip with his grandfather. After he left, I realized that I hadn’t sent any essential oils with him other than his hand sanitizer!

What was I thinking?! I am the Aromatherapist right?!

It was only a few days into his trip that I began to totally regret my mistake.

First, he came down with a cold (after all, a boy on a trip without his mother- I can  just visualize the germs!).

Then he got poison ivy!

By the time he got home his eyes were swollen, his neck was swollen and he was unrecognizable.

After crying, I immediately went to work and he’s now back to normal; but it made me realize that I need to have a first aid kit ready to go AT ALL TIMES!

As an aromatherapist and mother, I believe that the following essential oils are the most crucial to have with you while traveling, as well as at home for everyday use.

Trust me, no one in my family will ever travel without them again!

First Aid Essential Oils

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium is known for being a wonderful emotional healer, but that is not why I’ve included it in the first aid kit.

This essential oil is also a great oil to stop bleeding!

When the oil is first applied the bleeding will initially increase- wait what?! Don’t panic!

The reason for this is that the oil causes the body to flush any bacteria or dirt from the wound by increasing the blood flow, then the bleeding will stop!

Pretty amazing huh?

Let me share a personal experience that I have had with geranium essential oil.

As a mom, I hate trimming baby fingernails. I’m always terrified that I am going to cut their tiny fingers!

I’m sure you can see where this is going!

When my daughter was a baby I was trimming her fingernails and yes, I accidentally cut my baby’s finger!

Truth be known I probably cried more than she did.

But, all ended well because I pulled out my geranium essential oil and the bleeding stopped!

Ravensara Essential Oil

Ravensara Essential Oil

Ravensara isn’t an oil that everyone is familiar with.

Just think of Ravensara as Tea Tree on steroids!

It is an antibacterial powerhouse!

If I get bit by a dog or cut myself on some rusty wire, this is the oil that I’m going to use to prevent an infection. It’s awesome!

Some additional benefits of Ravensara are that it is anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic (meaning it may be used to relieve anxiety), and that it is also great for the respiratory system.

This makes it an excellent oil to assist the body during cold and flu season as well. All in all it is an oil that you definitely want to have on hand!

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Now you might be wondering, why use Tea Tree when we have Ravensara in our Kit?

Besides being a great antibacterial and a powerful anti fungal, Tea Tree is great for poison ivy!

I use equal parts Tea Tree and Lavender for poison ivy and itch relief.

The best way to use them for poison ivy is mixed in bath salts (I prefer these bath salts due to their strong drawing power), and added to warm water for a 20 minute soak.

This helps to dry the poison ivy out, decrease inflammation and relieve that horrible itch!

I also mix the oils in a spray bottle with plant enzymes (I use these plant enzymes) for an itch relief that you can carry with you.

Another option is to mix the oils in a carrier oil and apply topically. I love to use this grapeseed oil as my carrier.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Most of us are familiar with Lavender essential oil. It is a wonderful all purpose oil.

As I mentioned, I use it for poison ivy relief, and it is also great for insect bites.

But it’s most powerful use, and the main reason that it should be in your first aid kit, is for it’s ability to soothe burns.

René-Maurice Gattefossé, the man who coined the term ‘aromatherapy’, discovered this in the year of 1910, when he badly burned his arm while conducting an experiment in his lab.

He quickly plunged his arm into the nearest liquid, which happened to be a vat of lavender oil.

He was amazed at the results! His arm healed very rapidly with minimal scarring!

Emergency Preparedness Essential Oils

Helichrysum Essential Oil

Helichrysum Essential Oil
Helichrysum is my number one oil for nerve damage or anything nerve related.

But the main reason that I have included it in my first aid kit is that it is wonderful for bug bites. I’m talking ants, mosquitoes, spiders, you name it!

I use both helichrysum and Lavender together for this.

What makes helichrysum unique though, is that it has the ability to draw from the bite, helping to pull out toxins. I personally wouldn’t want to get bit by a spider without it!

Peppermint Essential Oil

peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint is traditionally used for indigestion and upset stomach.

It is also a great oil to help detox the liver.

As a mom, what I love most about peppermint though, is that it has the ability to bring down a fever. Fevers actually are a good thing. A fever is the body’s way of fighting off infections and illnesses.

But, we also don’t want a fever to climb too high.

Being a mother myself, I totally understand that panicky feeling that you can sometimes get as a fever climbs higher and higher!

I apply peppermint Essential Oil (diluted in a carrier) to the bottom of my children’s feet, the back of the their necks along the hairline, and their foreheads. Always be careful not to get it in the eyes.

(As a quick side note, if you ever get an essential oil in the eyes DO NOT try to flush it out with water! This will only drive the oil in deeper! Instead flush the eyes with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, olive oil etc. Essential oils are not water soluble, they are fat soluble.)

Another way that you can utilize this awesome oil for fever reduction, is by mixing it in bath salts and soaking for 20 minutes in the tub. This is, I feel, the most effective way to bring down a fever.

First Aid Essential Oil Blend

Spice Of Life Essential Oil Blend

Spice of Life a Essential Oil Blend

Spice of Life is actually an essential oil blend.

It contains premium organic and wild-crafted: Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin Orange, Black Cumin, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus (R), Nutmeg, Thyme, Oregano and Ravensara essential oils.

The Spice of Life blend was inspired by a band of spice traders in the 14th century.

Amazingly, none of these traders contracted the black plague that was rampant at the time.

When asked by a king to reveal their secret they revealed that they were using the very spices they traded to prevent illness and protect their immunity.

These legendary spices have been combined in the Spice for Life essential oil blend.

Research within the past two decades is starting to confirm what these spice traders hundreds of years ago already knew: these spices have powerful antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antimicrobial, antineoplastic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

This essential oil blend is the bottle that I grab whenever we are battling colds and flus!

Well, there you have it! The best DIY essential oils first aid kit!

Have you used any of these essential oils before? What were your experiences? Do you have any additional oils that you feel are a ‘must have’ in your first aid kit? If so let me know! I love to hear from you!
